Advice, inspiration, and the creative process of coffee and PJs
Among her many hats—painter, dancer, art advocate—Maggie Hanley is one of our incredible ArtStorming podcast guests. Today in our Creativity Toolkit series, Maggie shares a glimpse into her personal creative rhythms, how she navigates the inevitable moments of self-doubt, and the simple but profound practices that fuel her artistic journey. Her concise and insightful answers offer direct wisdom for all of us seeking to spark our own creativity.
What does your typical creative process look like? Are there any rituals or routines you follow?
Clear my head. Make a fresh palette. Cup of coffee. In my PJs.
What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self just starting out in your creative field?
Never stop. Don't quit. Put in the hours. Nothing is precious when you begin to paint. Don't give up. Ever.
How do you overcome creative blocks or moments of self-doubt?
I reframe it: I am recharging.
How do you see your art connecting with the world or your audience? What message or feeling do you hope to evoke?
My paintings evoke emotional and visceral reactions from viewers. Some jolting, some soothing.
Could you share a small, actionable exercise related to your art form that our listeners could try at home to spark their own creativity?
Once a year, look back to see how much progress you've made.
What have you found to be the most inspiring and/or transformative book, film, workshop, seminar, etc. about the arts or creative process?
Artist INC
